Using Pacing to Hypnotize Someone

One of the most important parts of conversational hypnosis and learning to hypnotize someone is understanding techniques to build rapport. Rapport is the ability to “tune in” with another person on a subconscious level. By doing this, you gain their trust. This in turn will enable you to persuade and control the other person so you ultimately get your way.

Did you know that about 70% of conversation occurs without using words? You can communicate a lot through facial expression, body language and gestures. You can use different verbal and non-verbal cues to establish rapport. Learning conversational hypnosis will teach you various techniques for both.

To hypnotize someone by building rapport, you can use verbal and non-verbal techniques called pacing and mirroring. When pacing, you do the do the same thing the other person does in the same way. Pacing can involve conversation, body language, expressions and speaking rhythm just to name a few.

Mirroring is the same thing as pacing but does not involve anything verbal. Instead, you copy body language, gestures and anything else not involving conversation or speaking.

By figuring out how someone uses his or her senses (seeing, hearing and touch) to communicate and understand things, you can build rapport with pacing. By matching this representational system, the other person gets the sense that you really understand them and you’re both on the same page.

Another way to use pacing to hypnotize someone is to listen to the rhythm of their conversational style. Everyone has a natural cadence to the way they speak. Pay attention to their tempo and rhythm and then try to match it. This also builds rapport since the conversation will seem to flow with the same cadence.

Also pay attention to the other person’s voice. If they have a very distinct pitch (high or low), it’s best to NOT match it. That will come across as mocking them and will have the opposite effect of building rapport! If you can adjust your tone slightly without sounding like you’re imitating the other person, give it a try. This can have a very powerful effect!

For any of these techniques to work, you need to practice! Try out some of these techniques on friends and strangers for a week to see what happens. Eventually you’ll master pacing techniques and be one step closer to being able to hypnotize someone.
